Here are a few pictures of the Sam Moore, located about an hour south of Bear's Den. It is typical of AT Shelters in this area with the three-sided log construction, raised concrete slab for sleeping, and a location (here a bench) for sitting. Privy is located just up hill.
I always enjoy reading hiker's comments from the Shelter Log - this one went back through mid June. Most of the traffic was travelling North and comments tended to mix Zen-like perspectives with entries happy at the prospect of leaving the Virginia part of the trail behind. There are also a fair number of entries suggesting the hikers had cleared the "roller coaster" (as this part of the trail is known). In actuality there are a two more decent climbs before you get to route 7, and another three on the other side as well.
